First session of the Spring 2011 semester.

Matt, 18" x 14", oil on canvas
Painting Matt, I wanted to express the appearance of his seasoned character instead of clean superficial likeness. For that purpose I kept my brushstrokes rather short and a bit choppy.
At the very beginning of painting, I put down the edge on his right orbit just below the eyebrow as the hardest and adjusted other edges accordingly as the painting progressed.
Trying to keep the pose still, Matt's firm gaze seemed to magnify the intensity of his blue eyes. So I further accentuated them against the ruddy cheek below.
